Workout Nutrition On the Go

I was recently at a fitness conference and got into a conversation with a friend of mine regarding workout nutrition when traveling as it can be tricky since airport security isn’t too keen on people boarding planes with ziploc bags full of a nondescript white powders.
My friend said that he usually just brings along a prepackaged MRP like Met-Rx, MyoPlex, or Nytro-Pro40. That got me thinking as while those probably would do the trick there must be a better option. Here are two that I came up with.

Vitamin Water- Energy + 6 Biotest BCAA tabs - The vitamin water flavor Energy contains 125mg of caffeine and almost 40 grams of carbohydrates combine that with rapidly digesting BCAAs and you have an awesome workout drink.
Chocolate Milk – I call this the poor man’s workout shake as it contains a blend of whey and casein proteins along with a heap of sugar. There have actually been studies that have found benefit to consume milk/chocolate milk post workout. The great thing about using chocolate milk as your workout shake when traveling is that you don’t need to bring it with you as you can find it just about anywhere.

“I thought you blogged every day?!!”
You may be wondering why I haven’t updated the Naked Nutrition Blog this week. I have been in the throws of finishing up a chapter for a text book “Nutrition in the Prevention and Treatment of Disease.”

Fortunately it will be done by next week so next week I will be back blogging as usual. In the meantime check out a QnA I did for Coach Dos at his forum.

Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down – BCAA
August 9, 2007 | 2 Comments
Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down is a new feature where I will review two different things (products, methods, etc) giving one the thumbs up and one the thumbs down.
Branched Chain Amino Acids are extremely popular. The scientific research regarding their effectiveness is not yet conclusive but many coaches and trainers swear by them and the theoretical rationale behind them is solid. They are great for preventing excess catabolism when dieting or creating an anabolic environment when packing on muscle. What type should you use?

This goes to Biotest’s BCAAs. The tablets are convient and not in ordinately large. BCAA tablets are great for middle of the night “feedings”, before workouts, between meals, first thing in the morning, or anytime you don’t have time to mix up powder in water.
.
Thumbs down goes to SciFit BCAAs. This product is a pure BCAA powder. As a general rule free form amino acids taste nasty. These are not exception. The are also incredibly hard to get into solution when trying to mix them.
