Exercise…you might as well learn to like it

I can remember being a kid and my mom telling me to eat my veggies. I didn’t like them, but had to eat them anyway. She told me that I might as well “learn to like them” since I have to eat them anyway. As a child, you will do anything to get out of eating something you don’t like, but also you tend to find creative ways to “wash them down.”

Working out is no different. Many people just don’t like to do it, even though they know they should and more so, know they have to. So, what is a person to do? Learn to like it!

Here are some quick tips to make your training regiments more fun, so they don’t seem so bad.

• Use music to power your workouts. Get a MP3 player and put your favorite music on it and rock out when you train. Music can keep you going, give you a boost of energy and keep your training fun. Don’t rely on the gym music that pipes through the speakers to fuel your fire. Listen to what you like.

• Find a training partner or training group to workout with you. Get someone that you like, and trust that will show up, work hard with you and keep you going. Good training partners can be hard to find, but if you look hard enough, they are out there. It doesn’t even have to be a friend. Just find someone that shares the goal of wanting to get fit and will be reliable enough to show up and push you…while you do the same for him or her.

• Find an online fitness forum and keep an open training log. This can be a big step for people, but online fitness forums can provide you will a ton of support and make your training sessions more interesting and motivating. Knowing that people are reading your log and helping you with your goals is a giant step in the direction of staying motivated and having fun with your workouts. Although these people are not going to the gym with you, you know they are there waiting to see what you did and how you are doing.

• Goals!!! Sounds simplistic but setting training goals is a great way to keep working-out fun. When you have a goal and you see some progress towards that goal, it makes training much better and more interesting. You learn to compete against yourself. If you have an ounce of competitive juice in your blood, you will answer this call and learn to actually like training just so you can beat yourself and reach your goals.

• Hire a trainer. If you really hate working out and it is getting in the way of you even showing up, its time to get professional help. Find a good, qualified trainer that you get along with. Its important to interview trainers and find someone that is really going to make your training fun. There are trainers out there that don’t talk and are all business. This is not the guy or gal for you. You need someone with a personality that will make your hour session fly by.

• Switch your program. Find someone to write you a new program that will keep you moving in the right direction but also be a little more fun. There are great programs out there via the internet that are results orientated and also fun.

• Join a boot camp. Boot camps are great ways to add some fun to your training. Boot camps are packed with people just like you that want to work hard and get results. The cool thing is that they are a lot of fun. Sign up for a 12 week boot camp every few months and your progress will soar and you will have ton of fun doing them.
