Is Healthy the New Fat?
January 21, 2009 | 6 Comments
If there is one bad thing about being a celebrity it is that the whole world gets to see you lose weight and then put it back on again (and again and again). Oprah has been in the spotlight lately regarding this very topic. I have noticed two heavier celebrities also back in the weight loss spotlight – Wynonna Judd (Alli) and Queen Latifah (Jenny Craig).
Queen Latifah’s story is interesting as she has previously been adamant about how it is okay to be heavy. But now she is using Jenny Craig because..
“I see myself getting healthier, having more energy and feeling better.”
Really?
I don’t buy it. She wants to lose weight. There is nothing wrong with wanting to lose weight.
Oprah and Wynonna Judd are a different story as now that they have gained some weight back, they just want to be healthy.
Really?
I don’t buy that either. They are not happy about gaining the weight back and need a new spin on their story so now it ‘not about numbers on a scale’.
On the Alli website is says
“With the help of alli, Wynonna Judd started a new healthier chapter in her life.”
I think it is important to be honest with yourself – especially regarding your desire to lose weight. If you say that you just want to be healthy but really you want to lose 20lbs. Lying through your teeth isn’t going to help the weight come off faster.
This is an important lesson and I think that the new healthy trend amongst overweight celebrities is sending the wrong message to people. And as much as I lothe the fact that celebrities and not trained professionals are in the weight loss spot light they are broadcasting this message across the country.
Just be honest with yourself. If you want to lose weight. Admit it, set a goal, make it happen. Don’t settle for ‘being healthy’.
My buddy Tom Gifford decided that he wanted to see his 6 pack. He purchased Warp Speed Fat Loss (the next day) and started the program the following day. He completed the entire 28 day program (lost about 13lbs) but still didn’t have his 6 pack abs. He took two weeks off of Warp Speed Fat Loss and then went on it again.
Look at the picture he just sent me.
Don’t settle. Set a weight loss goal and crush it.
If you want a plan that is already laid out for you, then you can use Warp Speed Fat Loss just like Tom.

Got something to say?

Hi Mike,
I know! This very question has been stirring in my head as well, so much so that I researched the “health or beauty – what drives weight loss success?” question and posted a two part article with some research finding on my blog here:
http://thetruthaboutfatlossforwomen.com/2009/01/08/health-or-beauty-what-drives-weight-loss-success/
You will be interested to know that the results of this particular study support your opinion – those who were most successful at maintaining weight loss (as opposed to the regainers and non-losers) were motivated by the pschology of weight loss: increased confidence and all that goes with it.
Interestingly, several of the people who commented on my blog entry cited BOTH reasons as pivotal to their success.
At the same time, when someone wants to be “healthy”, if you go under the surface a little bit, we see that the “healthy” is so that they can enjoy the benefits that the health brings – which is of course improved appearance, in most cases!

Time to get back on my 28 day WSFL plan. Thanks for the motivation.
Mike,
Celebrities are full of you know what. From what I can tell they’ll say whatever their sponsor wants them to say.
Alli? Give me a break. THAT is healthy?
Look, it would be awesome if celebrities really meant this. They have enormous pull with the general pop. I think without a doubt once people finally decide to take control of their overall well-being is when permanent changes take place. True lifestyle changes that create positive changes physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
If celebs can help inspire that change I’m all for it. But hopefully they won’t start telling everyone it’s ok to be fat as hell so long as you’re “healthy.”
Again, Alli? Give me a break.

Can you go on to the WSFL program 7 days after completing it or is that too early?
That may be too early. Listen to your body 10-14 days would be better
Nice Articles, thanks for this, I really liked your blog!
