Team Naked Nutrition - An Open Invitation

June 24, 2008

I’m glad you found me. The world (and the world wide web) is huge. What are the chances that you and I would cross paths. You could have gotten here from any number of different ways - read an article I wrote, saw one of my videos, saw me at a seminar, read a blog of someone using one of my programs, or even had your teeth cleaned by my mother. However it happened, I’m glad. And I hope you stick around.

If you visit the Naked Nutrition Network often you will find top notch nutrition, health, and fitness information. Hopefully you get sucked in. Not just the info but to me and the ‘virtual community’ I affectionately call ‘Team Naked Nutrition’.

As you’ll find out (if you don’t know already) the members of Team Naked Nutrition follow a couple of simple (but powerful) guidelines.

1. The 6 Pillars of Nutrition - The 6 Pillars of Nutrition drive our day to day eating. If you want to lose weight, get healthy, ward off heart disease, or muscle up your body so you don’t feel embarrassed to take off your shirt at the beach then the 6 Pillars need to be your mantra.

i. Eat five to six times a day.
ii. Limit your consumption of sugars and processed foods.
iii. Eat fruits and vegetables throughout the day.
iv. Drink more water and cut out calorie-containing beverages (beer, soda, etc.).
v. Focus on consuming lean proteins throughout the day.
vi. Save starch containing foods until after a workout or for breakfast.

2. No B.S. - I don’t do hype. I do real world. If something is good - I’ll tell you. If I think a supplement is worth taking - I’ll tell you. If I think a trainer is worth listening to then I’ll tell you. I don’t do controversy for the sake of being controversial. The bottom line really is I’ll share/recommend/not recommend things to you as if you were family. I buy certain supplements for my parents that I think are worth taking. I give my sister’s training programs by people that I respect. I share that same information with you.

I pretty much got hoodwinked (I never thought I’d work that word into my writing) as a kid. I bought into the bodybuilding/fitness industry’s classic pitch. I had subscriptions to Muscle & Fitness, Muscle Media, MuscleMag International, Ironman, and Flex. When I was 17 years old I competed in my first (and only) bodybuilding contest. I ‘wrote’ my own training program (Flex Wheeler’s arm routine, Lee Priest’s leg routine, Shawn Ray’s ab routine…you get the picture).

My diet - terrible. I was sucking down all kinds of supplements (having no real idea what they did - the magazine’s said they worked right?) and my diet consisted of instant oatmeal, chick thighs, egg whites, and brown rice (or some similar terrible combination).

It wasn’t until I went off to college and started my journey to become a scientist and researcher that I slowly began to discover all the crap (products and doctrine) that I had been inhaling month after month.

When I started to “see the light” so to speak. I wanted to let people know so they wouldn’t waste their time like I did (more on that in Guideline 3). I started my own 3x a week newsletter. No fancy software like I have now. I had a free yahoo email account and a free geocities website. I would sit down on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday every week and bang out 500-1000 word nutrition, health, and weight loss emails to friends, family, and random people from all over the country that miraculously found my site.

I feel fortunate to play the nutrition game from so many angles - writer, researcher, coach, and practitioner. I take what I see and learn from all those areas, coagulate it, filter out the garbage, and give it to you whether it be on the Naked Nutrition Network for free or in a more comprehensive arrangement like Your Naked Nutrition Guide or Warp Speed Fat Loss.

In the end the goal is always the same. Give you the information you need, in a package that you can easily put to use in the real world to get yourself the results you desire. So as a Naked Nutrition practitioner you don’t do B.S. either.

No controversy because it sounds cool.

No crazy diets or supplements because of some random scientific study or article.

Real World, Real Results, Real People.

3. Synergy & Longevity - Speaker Dan Kennedy once said at one of his seminars that he was shocked to find out you don’t get more money for doing things the hard and/or long way. He also said that it is important to identify one’s ‘core competency factor’. What do they do best? Just because a person is smart in one area, it doesn’t mean that they are smart in another area (even though they might pretend they are).

The same is true for fitness/nutrition. I try to speak to you only about nutrition as that is what I know best. I don’t write training programs because there are far better more experienced people in this area that I can refer you to - Alwyn Cosgrove, Bill Hartman, Keith Scott, to name a few. You put together the nutrition you learn with me with the training and injury prevention you learn from them and you have an unstoppable synergy.

Synergy is key.

This is why I try to always about nutrition in terms of improving your health AND your physical appearance. The two can’t be separated. The diet that will make you healthy (warding off heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc) is also the diet that will get you leaner and stronger. If you can optimize that relationship then you will be in a realm that most only wish they had the discipline and ‘luck’ to be in (although we know luck has nothing to do with it).

The same goes for training. Above I mentioned Alwyn Cosgrove, Bill Hartman, and Keith Scott. These guys get it. When I talk training and training program development with these guys their concern is about making sure you can move and live pain and injury free WHILE AT THE SAME TIME burning fat or building muscle and getting your stronger. It is easy to put together a generic training program that will help you lose weight. But if you show that same training program to Alwyn he will show you, in less than 45 seconds, 5 flaws in the program that will lead to injury if that program is followed for more than 4 weeks - Bill and Keith are the same way.

I don’t want you to do things the hard way. You don’t need to start out like I did - from scratch. Instead you can use the synergy of Naked Nutrition and intelligent training to sky rocket your results and success.

It does take some ’sticktoitveness’ though. That is where longevity comes in. You will have all the pieces to your synergistic puzzle but you need to put them together EVERYDAY.

Football coach Bud Grant once said

“Everybody wants to quit. It is okay to want to quit. It is just not okay to quit.”

Think about that next time you want to skip your planned meal for a piece of cheese cake (or a heaping plate of pasta) or the next time you want to terminate a set early or end your cardio session 5 minutes before scheduled.

When you are there, in the moment, it is easy to convince yourself that you’ve done so well already coming up short this one time won’t hurt.

As my friend Alwyn Cosgrove says

“It might not hurt, but will it help?”

The key to longevity is developing the mindset in which you make decisions based on not if things will hurt but if they will help.

So…

That’s what Team Naked Nutrition is about.

  • The 6 Pillars of Nutrition
  • No B.S.
  • Synergy & Longevity

That’s what I hope you are, or want to be, about.

If so…join up.

There is an unofficial member’s club is those who own and follow the practices found in Your Naked Nutrition Guide. But I’m not asking to you pick up a copy right now.

Do the free stuff first.

Join my email list, subscribe to the Naked Nutrition Network’s RSS feed, come by the site a couple times a week, listen to Naked Nutrition Radio. It doesn’t matter which you choose (although I suggest you do it all).

Take action, get involved, embrace our 3 Guidelines of Success, and join the Team.

It isn’t for everyone (especially the longevity part) but I hope it is for you. And as I said at the beginning - I’m glad you found me and make sure to stick around.

All the best,
Mike Roussell
