Your late 20s is the prime time to seriously focus on building a proper skincare routine to have healthy and wrinkle-free skin in the future. This is the decade when most people begin to give importance to their skin but don’t know where to start.

From what skincare ingredients to use to whether you should invest in anti-aging skincare, all of these questions might get a bit overwhelming for you. But not to fret, we reached out to two skin experts—Dr. Harshna Bijlani, celebrity skin expert and medical head of The Ageless Clinic and Dr. Debeshi Bhattacharjee, an award-winning cosmetologist and founder of Leuer Aesthetics—to get a complete guide on skincare for the late 20s.

In order to build the right skincare routine for late 20s, you need to first understand your skincare concerns and then turn to the most effective skincare ingredient to solve the issue. Dr Bhattacharjee says, “The most common skin concerns they face are suntan, acne breakout, uneven skin tone, dark circles (due to late-night exposure) & fine lines.”

To treat skin concerns like hyperpigmentation, unevenness and tan, she recommends to use Vitamin C, niacinamide, kojic acid, alpha arbutin, and AHAs like glycolic acid, mandelic acid or lactic acids, and even retinol.

And when it comes to acne and acne scars, she advises alpha arbutin, azelaic acid, and also BHAs like salicylic acid with a mild concentration percentage like 1-2%.

Do you need to use anti-ageing skincare in your late 20s?

Our skin starts to lose collagen as we age which gives rise to signs of ageing like wrinkles and fine lines if we don’t treat it from the beginning.

Dr Bijlani points out, “Studies show that there is a steady depletion of 1% of collagen production (the stuff in our skin that controls softness and elasticity to help it look young) every year right from our 20s. By the age of 40 there is a loss of collagen of over 30% and, unfortunately, even a 3% reduction is noticeable.”

Hence, starting with anti-ageing skincare in the late 20s is vital to have youthful-looking skin in the future.

Instead of opting for the age-old CTM (cleanse, tone, moisturise) routine, Dr Debeshi Bhattacharjee says to follow a CCMS (cleanse, correct, moisturise and sunscreen) routine instead.

She also emphasises on taking a holistic approach where you give your physical and mental health as much importance as your skincare regime. “My advice is to make people understand that whatever happens inside reflects outside,” she adds.

Dr Bijlani also laid out the perfect skincare routine you need to use in your late 20s:

  1.  She recommends starting with the double-cleansing method to thoroughly cleanse the face “as most of us tend to wear waterproof SPF and makeup throughout the day.”
  2.  Use a toner to balance the skin’s pH level. “Try and use it 2-3 times a week if you’re someone who has dry skin and find toners over-drying. You can even use hydrating toners if you have dry skin,” she advises.
  3.  In the third stage, she advises to use the actives your skin needs. “Use your products with active ingredients so they can penetrate directly into the skin,” Dr Bijlani recommends, adding that you must avoid using any active ingredients during the day time.
  4.  Also, exfoliating skin 2-3 times a month is of vital importance as it helps to improve cell turnover and sloughs away dead skin cells.
  5. Then, use a moisturiser to seal and lock all the actives and infuse skin with hydration.
  6. Follow all this up with a sunscreen in your AM morning routine. “Make sure you’re using at least SPF 30 or above with a PA rating of +++,” she adds.
