With a little help from trainers

Fitness instructors and trainers play a critical role in aiding the personal development of both gym enthusiasts and individuals seeking to achieve fitness-oriented goals in ensuring a higher quality of health.

While coaches are sometimes viewed as helping an athlete excel in a certain sport, fitness instructors and trainers on the other hand are more focussed towards clients who perform physical activities for recreational purposes or general training.

It is worth noting that individuals have varied goals depending on their interests with regards to fitness, such as improving muscle definition or embarking on weight loss, which is likely to require an adjustment to food and nutrition.

Following a series of consultations to better understand the client’s profile, fitness instructors may design a programme catered towards their personal needs.

These programmes may consist of a number of customised exercises or what meals they should consume in order to find the right balance in their healthy lifestyle.

According to the United States (US) Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of fitness instructors and trainers is projected to grow 39 per cent from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations.

In Brunei Darussalam, the growing number of people attending fitness studios and gyms highlights the need and demand for producing capable and qualified fitness instructors and trainers.

The variety of fitness classes relating to circuit training, indoor cycling, boxing and many others also highlights the need for specific coaches who specialise in the relevant disciplines.

During a class, fitness instructors will demonstrate activities, exercise machines and lift weights which will be followed by the class participants.

Besides that, fitness instructors also allow individuals to train in a safe and controlled environment while also helping them maximise their output and effort. For increased trust and confidence in achieving results, individuals can look to engage a personal trainer who has international qualifications, such as the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) certification.

Fitness instructors also provide guidance by, for example, correcting the form, technique and movement of a gym enthusiast in performing a certain move and sharing tips or insights to better the individual’s overall performance.

Their knowledge also serves as a valuable tool for individuals looking to perform certain movements accurately, which will not only reduce the risk of injury but also help them to carry out their workout effectively.

While fitness instructors have limited time to attend to an individual during class, there is no harm in getting their views on any queries one has once the class concludes.

For instance, an individual may need to improve their punching technique or their footwork positioning during a boxing class. Although a conversation with the fitness instructor after class might be brief, their guidance will help one to perform in an acceptable manner and also consequently improve their boxing ability thus achieving an improved level of fitness.

When it comes to improving general health, the role of fitness instructors is as paramount as health practitioners albeit in a different capacity, as the latter mainly focusses on a medical perspective.

Quite often stories can be heard through social media postings where a user displayed a ‘before’ and ‘after’ picture of their weight, after undergoing a programme arranged by their personal trainer.

Therefore, it can be said that personal trainers can have a profound impact on people’s lives, to an extent where their physical and mental well-being will be significantly enhanced.

Fitness instructors can also inspire individuals to perform to the best of their abilities by finding ways and solutions to help them achieve their goals.

While an individual may be tested to their limit specifically their strength or endurance, it is only the best interest of fitness instructors to get the best out of their client.
